Window seats in Seven Sisters: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made at our workshop and fitted by us.

  • Unused space below a sash window
  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage

What prompts window seats in Seven Sisters

A quiet place to read is a common wish. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • An empty bay that does not get used
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Bartholomew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Window seats in Seven Sisters

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. We will look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Seven Sisters. Typical reasons to get in touch are a bay window that’s hard to furnish and a nursery or bedroom short of storage; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Seven Sisters date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions from Seven Sisters

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Seven Sisters?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near Seven Sisters station?

Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check whether there is a radiator under the window
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
  • Note whether your window has working shutters

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.

Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch in later. It suits a seat that sees daily use.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Windows can run with condensation in winter, so a moisture-resistant grade of MDF makes sense. It gives a smooth base for paint, and holds its shape in the bay.

Making use of tricky spaces in Seven Sisters

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the area around Seven Sisters, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 22 entries within half a mile of the centre of Seven Sisters. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and window seats can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Haringey sets its own rules. Where a street in Seven Sisters is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Seven Sisters station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Earlsmead Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

Ready-made benches are made in fixed widths and depths. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, and the storage below can be drawers, a lid or both. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First you let us know about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
  2. We visit to measure the window and go through the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
