What prompts loft storage in Seven Sisters

A dormer can feel like wasted space. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It adds storage without crowding the room.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • A dormer that isn’t being used
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room

If you live in a flat close to Seven Sisters station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Loft storage in Seven Sisters: what you get

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is carried up and fitted in your home in Seven Sisters. If you are living with furniture that can’t get up to the loft and boxes piled on loft boards, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are normally solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Seven Sisters date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece cannot reach. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Storage in Seven Sisters homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 54% of the housing in the streets around Seven Sisters, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Seven Sisters, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Bartholomew (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Parish Church of St Ann (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Haringey has its own. Depending on your street in Seven Sisters, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of Holy Trinity, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. Bruce Castle, about 1.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft, and how you get up to it.
  2. We come to measure the room and the way up to it, and talk through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Count the clothes you will need to hang
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Common questions about loft storage

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Seven Sisters?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Seven Sisters?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What loft storage can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Converting the loft itself, which is not our work

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.
