How we make alcove units for Southend
Many people choose cupboards at low level and shelves above them. Closed cupboards hide everyday clutter, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The cupboard top gives you a ledge for a lamp, a speaker or a plant. Heights are agreed with you to suit the room and your things. If your home has a place for a small desk and standard units leaving gaps at the sides, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Southend, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it our choice for doors and visible panels. It is a good match for alcoves on an external wall.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home once the units are in. Small marks are easy to touch up.
When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Alcove units for homes in Southend
In the streets around Southend, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and before 1919 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Southend, Historic England’s list includes The Fellowship Inn Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Southend (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where alcove units go.
Close to Forster Memorial Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a flat close to Bellingham station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What else we make in Southend
From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
- At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
- You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
- Once you are happy, the units are made at our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.
Preparing the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you need alcove units in Southend?
Many people ask about alcove units because the alcoves are the most obvious wasted space they have. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, so there are gaps at the sides and the top. Built-in units use the whole recess.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Tired cupboards in the alcoves
- Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
- Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
For a family home near Elfrida Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
What to check before you book
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Common questions about alcove units
I live near Bellingham station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is Southend in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Southend is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
When you need someone else
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
- Decorating the rest of the room
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How it works.
