Fitted wardrobes across SE6: what to expect
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, keeping rails at a height they can reach. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and no space in front for doors to swing.
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
How our quotes work
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Built around your room
Starting with a design visit
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Bedroom storage across SE6
Many older bedrooms across SE6 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.
In SE6, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in the SE6 postcode district (about 43%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older bedrooms normally have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. Of the 11 places we have local pages for in SE6, 1 has its centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Catford: If your children go to Holy Cross Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Laurence and Community Centre, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
What we do not do
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Decorating or plastering the room
Looking after your furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
Hang clothes evenly along each rail. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. Opening a window now and then helps.
Is bespoke worth it?
Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.
What to check before you book
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there is room to open them, hinged doors give full access. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Questions we are often asked
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
It is common, and it’s allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.
Where is the furniture made?
It is made at our workshop. After that, we fit it in your home.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.
