TV and media units in Southend
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Southend, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. Most enquiries start with a TV that looks out of place in the room and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Southend, so it is a layout worth planning for. TV and media units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.
Is it time for TV and media units?
Open-plan living is another reason. A built-in unit gives that wall order and holds books and everyday things as well.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- Clutter around the TV
- Cables trailing across the wall
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
For families living near Elfrida Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
What to check before you book
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Where other trades come in
It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Living-room storage in Southend
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Southend, with about 18% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Southend. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the streets around Southend (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where TV and media units go.
For an older house near St Dunstan, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Close to Forster Memorial Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Questions from Southend
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Southend?
Yes, we work across Lewisham, Southend included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Southend?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it’s useful to have them in mind early.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop.
- We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
