  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • Extra cupboard space

Bespoke kitchens designed for your room

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

There is a place for both. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. For period homes, tricky rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Why us?

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Designed for the room you have

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Southend

Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, sized to what you keep in them. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a painted dresser for the kitchen and a painted kitchen in a colour you choose.

A larger semi or detached house may have room for a utility area or boot room by the back door. Around Southend, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. Utility cupboards can be made in the same style and paint colour as the kitchen. Your plumber connects any washing machine or sink.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that is not flat, closing any gaps.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted kitchen can be refreshed over time.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

Questions from Southend

Is Southend in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, Southend is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Bellingham station?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Southend

About 55% of the homes in the area around Southend went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Southend, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Southend fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like The Fellowship Inn Public House, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Southend, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Kingswood House, about 2.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a family home near Elfrida Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

What affects the price in Southend

The price for your room depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

What to send when you contact us

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • How you want to use the space

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
