Built-in Bookshelves in West Ham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in West Ham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Storage for children’s books and games

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves deep enough for large books and a bare wall above a doorway, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Whether your home in West Ham is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, built-in bookshelves start with the room you actually have. Older rooms bring uneven walls and picture rails, while newer ones bring plasterboard walls and boxed-in pipes. Each is measured, and the pieces are made to fit it.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

My home in West Ham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is West Ham in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, West Ham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Newham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting

Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf and make sure each support is pushed fully home.

Put coasters under anything that holds water. Wipe up spills straight away.

Why bespoke in West Ham?

Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
