TV and media units in West Ham
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a TV that looks out of place in the room and set-top boxes stacked on a stand.
Homes in an area like West Ham can come from many different periods, so the walls behind TV and media units could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the measuring visit, then choose the fixings. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for TV and media units; if not, a full wall works well.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

The problems TV and media units solve
Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Standard TV stands rarely suit an tricky wall, and that’s where a bespoke unit helps.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Clutter around the TV
- A cabinet that traps heat
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
- Nowhere good for speakers
The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 2.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
What we don’t do
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

- Hand-painted finish
- Cable routes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Ventilated cabinets
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Ask for a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
West Ham homes and TV and media units
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around West Ham were built before 1919 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of West Ham, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Saints (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west, and Willow Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in West Ham is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
Living in a block of flats near West Ham station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to West Ham Church Primary School or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

FAQs: TV and media units in West Ham
My home in West Ham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ham station?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How much will my TV unit cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.
Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.
