Wall Beds in West Ham

In West Ham, we design wall beds around the room you actually have. Your wall bed is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A spare room that is rarely slept in
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

Wall beds for your home in West Ham

How we make wall beds for West Ham

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Doors on the front can look like a run of cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. If your home has a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a bed that fills a little-used room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms can be anything from a box room to a big front room. Wall beds can work in any of them, from a small spare room to a main bedroom. Nothing is assumed to be square, so the room is measured carefully.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Pricing wall beds in West Ham

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What to send when you contact us

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

West Ham homes and wall beds

About 39% of the homes in the neighbourhood around West Ham went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central West Ham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Newham sets its own rules. If your road in West Ham falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Saints, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Common questions about wall beds

Is West Ham in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and West Ham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

My home in West Ham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Related advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in West Ham

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Is it time for wall beds?

In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A spare room that is rarely slept in
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use

Sutton House, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
