Common questions about fitted cupboards
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Whitton?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Whitton is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What are the cupboards made of?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
About our fitted cupboards in Whitton
Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If you are living with a neat cupboard around the boiler and storage for towels and bedding, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A good part of the housing around Whitton is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The number of doors and drawers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
When you need someone else
Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Building work or structural changes
- Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
- Wiring for lights or sockets
Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it’s made from
- Birch plywood
- Adjustable shelves
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Ventilated doors
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Point out anything that needs access
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Think about how the cupboards will get in
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed as your storage changes.
If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.
From workshop to your room
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- We visit to measure up and discuss the design.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
- The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Arranging a design visit

Fitted cupboards for homes in Whitton
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Whitton were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 56%) and before 1919 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Whitton, Historic England’s list includes Brinsworth House (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Church of All Saints (Grade II), under half a mile south. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Fewer homes around Whitton date from before 1919 than across Richmond upon Thames: about 18%, against about 38%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We check what the walls are made of during the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.
If your children go to Royal Military School of Music or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. Richmond House, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Why bespoke in Whitton?
Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
