Why people ask for alcove units in Ivybridge

Sometimes it’s the clutter of a busy living room. Toys, games, post and chargers all need a home, and cupboards with doors keep them out of sight. The shelves above can then stay tidy.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves

Close to Inwood Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Alcove units in Ivybridge

Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are common in older rooms. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, depending on the look you want. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting for a tidy line around the room. These details are settled when we visit. If you are living with units that sit well with original features and everyday clutter left on show, that is what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good part of the housing around Ivybridge is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where alcove units work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for alcove units

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
  2. At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square.
  3. You get a written quote for the units, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
  5. At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall.

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke furniture is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, rather than the nearest standard size. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Caring for painted furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards
  • Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
  • Mention parking and access when we visit
  • Check whether there is a vent in the chimney breast

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, go gently with the new paintwork: lift things onto the shelves rather than sliding them, and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Keep heaters and very hot lamps from standing right against the paintwork.

Questions from Ivybridge

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ivybridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you make alcove units for homes in Ivybridge?

Yes. Ivybridge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry. If there is damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. It’s best done before the units go in. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

Alcove units in Ivybridge: local notes

About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ivybridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Ivybridge. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. All of London, Hounslow included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Ivybridge is covered by it. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Richmond House, about 1.1 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Twickenham station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
