About our bespoke kitchens in Anerley

A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, sized to what you keep in them. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts awkward space to work. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a painted dresser for the kitchen and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square.

Around Anerley, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the kitchen is often in the narrow rear part of the house, or in a side return that has since been extended. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Is bespoke worth it?

Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. Ours are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, so the finish can be repainted later. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Anerley

Flats with awkward kitchen walls are another reason. We can design for a galley, an alcove or a corner, so every run is used.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A kitchen finished in your colours

The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Questions from Anerley

Is Anerley in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Anerley included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Anerley?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
