About our bespoke kitchens in Penge
Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. Most enquiries start with a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and a kitchen planned around your appliances, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Older homes normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Penge date from then. That suits tall larder cupboards and wall cabinets taken up to the ceiling. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the paint finish is agreed in your quote.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

Related advice
Questions we are often asked
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Penge?
Yes. Penge is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Penge?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?
Yes. We scribe each cabinet to the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth, to give a level line for the worktop. That’s a big part of why bespoke suits period homes.
Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?
The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. Your quote sets out what’s included.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What we don’t do
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
- Building work, such as removing walls
- Plumbing, which is for your plumber
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How it works.

Kitchens in Penge: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Penge were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Penge. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 41% of households around Penge live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 23%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
If you live near Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 1.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
Penge is about 7 miles east of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Penge is part of that. Penge is one of 49 places on our list for Bromley.

Local landmarks in Penge
Our area takes in the homes around Crystal Palace School, Crooked Billet pub and Harris City Academy Crystal Palace, among other places. There’s a railway station in Penge itself: Penge West station. Nearby you’ll also find Crystal Palace Museum (0.8 miles north-west) and St Christopher's Hospice (0.5 miles north). Green spaces nearby include Dulwich Upper Wood.
Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Choose your appliances before the design is final
- Allow space to walk round an island
- Share the layout with your other trades
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.
Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer early. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.
Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Penge
A common reason is a room that ready-made units do not fit. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
- A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
- A dresser that suits a period house
- Making the most of a galley kitchen
For a flat near Penge West station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
What to check before you book
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
What affects the price in Penge
What you pay depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Your postcode and the borough
- Approximate measurements of the space
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after.
