Bespoke kitchens in Crystal Palace
Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. If you’re living with spaces sized for your oven and fridge and a larder for food and small appliances, that is what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Homes in an area like Crystal Palace can come from many different periods, so kitchens range from narrow back additions to open-plan rooms. Cabinets are designed for the room you have. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitting day, step by step
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Crystal Palace homes and bespoke kitchens
About 36% of the homes in the area around Crystal Palace went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Crystal Palace, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Around Crystal Palace, about 36% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of kitchens.
For an older house near St Paul's, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Near listed buildings like Subway, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Crystal Palace, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Crystal Palace School or a school nearby, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.
Crystal Palace is about 8 miles east of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. Wherever you are in Crystal Palace, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Crystal Palace is one of the places in Bromley where we make bespoke kitchens.
Every home in SE19, SE20 and SE26 is covered for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You’ll find streets here like Tudor Road, Colby Road and Church Road, and we cover homes on all of them for bespoke kitchens. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in Anerley (1 mile south), Penge (1 mile south-east), Gipsy Hill (1 mile west), Upper Norwood (1 mile west) and Sydenham (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Bromley, we also cover Orpington (8 miles east), Bromley (4 miles east), Beckenham (2 miles south-east), St Mary Cray (8 miles east), Chislehurst (6 miles east) and Plaistow (3 miles east).

The streets we cover here include those near Paxton Primary School, The Grape & Grain pub and Sydenham High School and the streets around them. Crystal Palace has its own railway station: Crystal Palace station. Well-known places in the area include Crystal Palace Museum (close by, under half a mile west) and St Christopher's Hospice (0.6 miles east). Open spaces near Crystal Palace include Dulwich Upper Wood.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- List what needs a home in the kitchen
- Make sure an island will not crowd the room
- Wipe up spills promptly
- Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
Once the kitchen is fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. In time, mild soapy water and a soft cloth keep them clean.
Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, especially on a colder external wall.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens
How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Crystal Palace?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do you cover homes near Crystal Palace station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Can you fit a kitchen in a room with uneven walls?
Yes. We scribe each cabinet to the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. It is one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.
What are the kitchen cabinets made of?
Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
Will you connect the sink and appliances?
No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we design around where their work goes.
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Ready-made ranges rarely include a larder or dresser that fits a particular alcove. We can build them to fit, with the same finish as the cabinets. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.
