Ask about bespoke kitchens in Coombe
Is it time for bespoke kitchens?
A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.
We are often asked to help with:
- More storage in a small kitchen
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
- Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
- A kitchen that fits an uneven room
For families living near Coombe Hill Junior School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.
What to check before you book
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
About our bespoke kitchens in Coombe
We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. People usually come to us about an island where space allows and a larder for food and small appliances, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Islands only work where there is room to walk round them. Around Coombe, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and in an extended kitchen there may be space. We check the clearances at the measuring visit, along with where water and power would need to reach. Your plumber and electrician run any services to it.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Kitchen drawers carry heavy pans and plates, so birch plywood is a good choice.
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF for many kitchen doors and panels, because it copes with a room that gets warm and steamy.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- New sockets or circuits
- Connecting a gas hob or cooker
- Making good walls and ceilings
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
- We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We don’t arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
Getting a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Kitchens in Coombe: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Coombe, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Coombe include Coombe Conduit House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Cedar Court (Grade II), under half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live near Cottenham Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church New Malden, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.
Coombe is part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 2 miles west of Kingston upon Thames. Whether your home in Coombe is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Coombe is one of the places in Kingston upon Thames where we make bespoke kitchens, and the borough has 16 places on our list.
Every home in KT2, KT3 and SW20 is covered for bespoke kitchens. Questions from Coombe
I live near Norbiton station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Coombe affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours you choose.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
