Loft storage in Coombe, Kingston upon Thames
Eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts, designed for your room in Coombe. After a design visit and a quote in writing, it is made in our workshop and fitted in your home.
- A dormer that is not being used
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
Need loft storage in Coombe?
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
About our loft storage in Coombe
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you don’t have to crawl in. At the design visit in Coombe, we will see what fits. If you are living with ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
A good part of the housing around Coombe is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You let us know about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
- At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It’s made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Getting a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Why bespoke in Coombe?
Off-the-shelf furniture is made for straight walls and full-height ceilings. In a loft room, standard pieces leave tricky gaps under the slope. Storage made for the loft follows its shape. It is a bigger investment, and the gain is the space it uses. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Making use of tricky spaces in Coombe
In the area around Coombe, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 19 entries within half a mile of the centre of Coombe. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Coombe joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.
If you live in a flat close to Norbiton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Southside House, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. Near listed buildings like Coombe Conduit House, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Coombe, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
The floor in a loft room is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so everything opens and closes as it should.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. That suits a room in daily use.
What it costs
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Parking near your home
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The number of doors and drawers
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- How you want to use the space
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
FAQs: loft storage in Coombe
Do you cover homes near Norbiton station?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It uses the full height of the room. We will work out the layout when we visit.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
