Surbiton Bespoke Kitchens
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Surbiton, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A kitchen that fits an uneven room
- Extra cupboard space
- A central island in a larger kitchen

Bespoke kitchens in Surbiton: what you get
We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a painted kitchen in a colour you choose and cabinets for a narrow kitchen.
Paint colour has a big effect in a kitchen, especially one that’s open to the living space. Cabinets can be spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site. For a kitchen in Surbiton, either can work, and the colour is agreed with you.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
- We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register do the plumbing, electrics and gas. We do not arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.
Before fitting day
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
There is a place for both. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is awkward, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is normally worth considering. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
How we price bespoke kitchens
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking and unloading on your street
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Examples of the look you’re after
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Surbiton
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Surbiton were built before 1919 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Surbiton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Horner Cottage, under half a mile east of the centre of Surbiton, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Mark's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. The wider area includes historic houses like Hampton Court Palace, about 1.8 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Surbiton
Does a conservation area in or near Surbiton affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Surbiton?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Surbiton is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How are bespoke kitchens priced?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Can you build an island in my kitchen?
Yes, where there’s space. We measure at the design visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors, and suggest another layout if it would crowd the room.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
The furniture is built in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
