Do you need bespoke kitchens in Islington?

Flats with tricky kitchen walls are another reason. We can design for a galley, an alcove or a corner without wasting space.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • Tall larder storage
  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen

If you live near Barnard Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

How we make bespoke kitchens for Islington

An island can be a good addition where there is space for one. We check there is comfortable space on every side, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. Most enquiries start with more storage in a small kitchen and tall larder storage; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older homes typically have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Islington date from then. Kitchen cabinets can go higher, with tall larders and top cupboards for occasional things. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the paint finish is agreed in your quote.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Kitchens in Islington homes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Islington were built before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Islington, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Islington joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Near listed buildings like Union Chapel, less than half a mile north of the centre of Islington, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Essex Road station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Islington is within the London Borough of Islington, about 1 mile north of Highbury. We design and make bespoke kitchens for homes in Islington. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Postcode districts we cover here for bespoke kitchens: N1, N7, NW1 and EC1V. If your home is on a street such as Gibson Square, Old Royal Free Square and Cloudesley Square, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for bespoke kitchens. The B515 and A5203 runs close to Islington, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. If you are just outside Islington, we also cover Pentonville (1 mile south), Angel (1 mile south), Barnsbury (1 mile north-west), Clerkenwell (1 mile south) and Lower Holloway (1 mile north-west).

Green spaces nearby include Barnsbury Wood.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Islington?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is Islington in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, Islington is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made kitchens are widely available and often cheaper, and in a square modern room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
