How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured not just the room: kitchens are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Angel

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. If you are living with a kitchen island with room around it and cabinets built around the appliances you choose, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

In a flat, the kitchen often opens onto the living room, so it has to look like furniture as much as a kitchen, so the look of the cabinets matters as much as what they hold. Around Angel, most households are in purpose-built flats. A tall unit or panel at the end of the run can link the kitchen to the living space.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Angel

A common reason is a room that ready-made units don’t fit. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, leaving gaps at the ends and above. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room instead.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A dresser that suits a period house

Dr Johnson's House, about 1.2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly near the sink. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on external walls.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Angel

Is parking a problem for fitting in Angel?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live in a flat in Angel. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?

Yes, that is part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

Angel homes and bespoke kitchens

About 39% of the homes in the area around Angel went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Angel, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Angel is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a family home near St John Evangelist RC Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. Close to Barnard Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
