Caring for painted furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
- Share the layout with your other trades
- Know your appliance sizes early
- Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.
Think about how the cabinets will get in. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so tell us about tight turns or small lifts.
About our bespoke kitchens in Highbury
A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. If you’re living with room for everything in the kitchen and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Highbury, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before cabinets go against it. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and usually cost less, and in a square modern room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Highbury
About 50% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Highbury went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 92 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Highbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Islington included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Highbury is covered by it. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 2 miles east. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a flat near Canonbury station, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Touching up or repainting is straightforward with a hand-painted finish.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens, as it stays stable and takes paint well.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Highbury?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Highbury?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It is made in sections, sized for the route not just the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it’s useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook. It’s useful to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- We come to measure up and plan the layout with you.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We do not arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.
Getting ready for fitting day

- Empty the space we will be working in
