About our bespoke kitchens in Hackbridge

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about spaces sized for your oven and fridge and a dresser that suits a period house.

Where a back room and kitchen have been knocked together, a kitchen-diner may have a chimney breast at the dining end, which can frame a dresser or tall cupboards. Around Hackbridge, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the design can make the most of it. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and damp is sorted first.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Honest limits

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber
  • New sockets or circuits
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that isn’t flat for a close fit.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits a kitchen that should look crisp, and it is finished before fitting day.

Bespoke kitchens in Hackbridge: local notes

In the streets around Hackbridge, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Hackbridge, Historic England’s list includes Base of Windmill at Mill House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Prospect House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. All of London, Merton included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Hackbridge. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

For a family home near St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. For an older house near St. Mark's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If you live near Cranmer Green, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Questions from Hackbridge

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hackbridge?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you cover homes near Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we quote once we have measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

If there’s enough room, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we measure for it during the design visit. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The kitchen is built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
