Loft storage designed for your room
What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level.
Preparing the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Empty the space we will be working in
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Loft storage in Surbiton: what you get
We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. The conversion itself isn’t our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. With the room in place, we can plan the storage. If you have a converted loft in Surbiton, the design visit is the first step. Typical reasons to get in touch are nowhere to store bags and boxes and a dormer that isn’t being used, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Homes in an area like Surbiton can come from many different periods, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What affects the price in Surbiton
There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How big the furniture is
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
Helping us understand the room
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.
Could you do it yourself?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Surbiton?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Surbiton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
Storage in Surbiton homes: local notes
About 31% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Surbiton went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 20 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Surbiton. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and eaves cupboards can be designed to work around them. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Kingston upon Thames has its own. If your road in Surbiton falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.
If your children go to Lime Tree Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Close to Stokes Field? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like Horner Cottage, less than half a mile east of the centre of Surbiton, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
