Aldwych homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Aldwych, with about 22% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Aldwych, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Le Strand (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Somerset House and King's College Old Building (Grade I), under half a mile south. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. For fitting in Aldwych, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If you live in a period home close to St Mary le Strand, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Aldwych is within the City of Westminster, about 2 miles west of City of Westminster. Whether your home in Aldwych is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Aldwych is one of the places in Westminster where we make built-in bookshelves.

We cover homes on streets such as Shoe Lane, Drury Lane and New Square, whether you want built-in bookshelves or another piece made for the room. Built-in bookshelves in Aldwych

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If your home has empty alcoves that could hold books and shelving that frames a window, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Aldwych, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Aldwych?

Working from home is another reason. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

Close to Lincoln's Inn Fields? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which rarely suits a mixed collection. Bespoke shelving can mix depths. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Aldwych

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Built around your room
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Aldwych

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Aldwych?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Aldwych?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Aldwych?

Simply message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

How deep should bookshelves be?

We set the depth to suit what you own. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It is how a straight bookcase meets a wall that isn’t straight.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.
