How we make fitted wardrobes for W1D

We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and too little room for clothes.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

How our quotes work

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry

  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Scribed to uneven walls

How to get a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Local landmarks in Aldwych

Fitted wardrobes across W1D: local notes

Bedrooms across W1D might have alcoves, sloping ceilings, bulkheads or none of these. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. You choose the colour and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.

About 49% of the homes in W1D went up before 1919, and about 22% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 49% of homes in the W1D postcode district were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that are not straight. About 77% of households in W1D live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Aldwych: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary Le Strand, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What affects the price in W1D

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in W1D

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It’s built in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in W1D?

It is easiest to get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Which boards do you build with?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
