What affects the price in Connaught Village

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Spray painting or hand painting

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

What to send when you contact us

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

To get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Connaught Village, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

About our built-in bookshelves in Connaught Village

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. If your home has empty alcoves that could hold books and shelves that suit a period room, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Connaught Village, most households live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat the living room often has to do several jobs. Built-in bookshelves can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run. Fixings are matched to the wall, whether it’s solid or plasterboard.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work

Why bespoke in Connaught Village?

Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish, and every part is planned for the wall. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It is then put together in the room.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Why us?

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Finished by spray or by hand

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

I live near London Paddington station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Connaught Village?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Connaught Village included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that’s often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They help whatever the room:

  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting

On an outside wall, do not pack books tight against the back, to help avoid condensation. Look out for damp signs early.

Don’t block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

Built-in bookshelves in Connaught Village: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Connaught Village were built before 1919 (about 44%) and since 2000 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Connaught Village, 18 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Hyde Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a flat close to London Paddington station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Evangelist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
