How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

About our built-in bookshelves in Paddington

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We fit across Westminster and the rest of London. People usually come to us about a home library or study and low shelves children can reach, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Paddington, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height built-in bookshelves can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Bought bookcases normally come in one depth, which rarely suits a mixed collection. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

What we don’t do

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Knocking through or altering walls

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Paddington

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How big the furniture is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Paddington

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Paddington?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Paddington included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

Do you cover homes near London Paddington station?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It is possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Tell us about heavy collections at the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Paddington

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Paddington were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Paddington, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Paddington joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Royal Parks of London, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For families living near International Community School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Evangelist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
