Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Adelphi
Do you cover homes near London Charing Cross station?
Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Adelphi?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
How deep should bookshelves be?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.
Built-in bookshelves in Adelphi: what you get
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in Adelphi, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. If you’re living with storage for children’s books and games and shelving that frames a window, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a flat, one room often does the work of a living room, dining room and study. Most households around Adelphi live in purpose-built flats, so built-in bookshelves that make use of the wall height are worth considering. A shallow run on one wall can hold a lot without taking much floor.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Shelves packed two rows deep
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
The wider area includes historic houses such as Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.2 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Real projects you can actually look at

What else we make in Adelphi
What it costs
What you pay depends on:
- The internal fittings
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking near your home
- The overall size of the piece
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.
Before the design visit
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.
Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Ask for a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They help whatever the room:
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
- Estimate how many metres of books you have
Make a note of the paint colour used. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.
Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat isn’t good for the room or the books.
Living-room carpentry in Adelphi: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the area around Adelphi, with about 26% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Adelphi, 38 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Adelphi is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If you live in a period home close to Savoy Chapel, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
