Built-in bookshelves in Belgravia: what you get

Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it. It makes use of wall space that’s typically left bare. If your home has space for art books and records and empty alcoves that could hold books, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Belgravia built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • A room lined with books
  • Books with nowhere left to go

If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

How to choose a carpenter in London

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, so they can match the walls or stand out. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why choose us

  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturday work by arrangement

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Belgravia

Does a conservation area in or near Belgravia affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Belgravia in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and Belgravia is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The bookcase is made at our workshop first.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Built-in bookshelves in Belgravia: local notes

About 60% of the homes in the area around Belgravia went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Belgravia is in the Belgravia Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.

Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like Church of Holy Trinity, under half a mile south of the centre of Belgravia, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Belgravia is within the City of Westminster, about 1 mile north of City of Westminster. Belgravia is part of the area we cover. Our Westminster coverage includes Belgravia, along with the rest of the borough.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
