Loft storage designed for your room

About our loft storage in Aldwych

A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. We will discuss the options in Aldwych. If your home has no wardrobe that fits under the slope and a converted loft with no fitted furniture, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Aldwych built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the eaves cupboard we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

FAQs: loft storage in Aldwych

I live in a flat in Aldwych. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

How is loft storage priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Drawers in the knee wall usually involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Is it time for loft storage?

A new loft conversion often needs storage to finish it. Standard furniture rarely suits the new room. Fitted storage finishes the room.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • A dormer that isn’t being used

For a flat near London Charing Cross station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces

When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone furniture can move with you, and it may suit a short stay. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. Which suits you depends on your plans. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

Could you do it yourself?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Fitted storage in Aldwych

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Aldwych, with about 22% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Aldwych, 35 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Aldwych. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

For a family home near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
