TV and media units in Aldwych: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Aldwych, with about 22% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 725 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Aldwych. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Aldwych is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Le Strand, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Aldwych, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For a flat near London Charing Cross station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Aldwych is about 2 miles west of City of Westminster, within the City of Westminster. Design visits and fitting in Aldwych can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Aldwych is one of the places in Westminster where we make TV and media units.

Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: W1D, WC2H and W1F. Whether you live on a street like Shoe Lane, Drury Lane and New Square or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for TV and media units. The A4 and A301 runs close to Aldwych, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. We also cover Clare Market (1 mile north), Covent Garden (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile east), Temple (1 mile east) and Adelphi (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Westminster, our area takes in City of Westminster (2 miles west), Victoria (2 miles south-west), Paddington Green (3 miles west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west) and Belgravia (2 miles south-west).

Near you in Aldwych

Our area takes in the homes around Ye Old White Horse pub, Mercers' School and LSE Shaw Library, among other places. Aldwych’s nearest station is London Charing Cross station, about 0.5 miles south-west of the centre. A little further out are Montfichet's Tower (0.7 miles east) and St Philip's Hospital (within half a mile north). For a walk, there is St. James's Park Lake and Ludgate Hill.

TV and media units in Aldwych: what you get

Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. If your home has leads that show from every angle and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Aldwych, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Houses of that age typically have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the room and what the unit needs to hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Ventilated cabinets

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we usually scribe the sides and top. It makes the unit look built in.

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you judge the colour in your own room. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near London Charing Cross station?

Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Aldwych?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Aldwych included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

Electrical work is not something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

How do you hide the TV cables?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

What affects the price in Aldwych

The price for your room depends on:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
