Westminster Built-in Bookshelves
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Westminster starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A home library or study
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Shelves packed two rows deep

Built-in bookshelves in Westminster: local notes
About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Westminster went up before 1919, and about 25% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. There are 412 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Westminster. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. About 25% of homes in the streets around Westminster were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so built-in bookshelves are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
Clarence House, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like London Underground Headquarters, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Westminster is about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster, part of the City of Westminster. Anywhere in Westminster, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.
Every address in SW1P, W1J and SW1V is covered for built-in bookshelves. You will find streets here like Eaton Lane, Wilton Road and Castle Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for built-in bookshelves. Westminster sits close to the A4 and A202. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in Millbank (1 mile north), Victoria (1 mile south-west), Pimlico (1 mile south), Vauxhall (1 mile south-east) and Lambeth (1 mile south-east). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles north-west), Connaught Village (2 miles north-west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles north-west) and Little Venice (3 miles north-west).
What’s near Westminster
We fit furniture in homes around Blewcoat School, St Matthew's School and Grafton Arms and the streets around them. The closest station to Westminster is London Victoria station, about 0.6 miles south-west of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find The Crime Museum (under half a mile south) and Kingly Court (0.9 miles north). For a walk, there is St. James's Park Lake.
Built-in bookshelves in Westminster: what you get
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether or have a plumber move it first. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bookcases that lean or wobble and a room lined with books.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Westminster date from before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for built-in bookshelves is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, especially behind loaded shelves.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
- We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Starting with a design visit
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Looking after your furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.
Keep heavy things on low shelves.
What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Decorating the rest of the room

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Westminster
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Westminster?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
My home in Westminster is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Books piled on the floor
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- Room for a record collection
For a flat near London Victoria station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
