Built-in Bookshelves in Millbank

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Millbank starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

Built-in bookshelves in Millbank: what you get

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Millbank. Typical reasons to get in touch are a room lined with books and books piled on the floor; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Millbank, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What we do not do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Knocking through or altering walls

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Millbank

Does a conservation area in or near Millbank affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My home in Millbank is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Millbank?

It is easiest to message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

What affects the price in Millbank

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They help before and after fitting:

  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Let us know about access early
  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving

Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade.

Millbank homes and built-in bookshelves

In the neighbourhood around Millbank, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Millbank include London Underground Headquarters (Grade I), under half a mile west, and Bluecoat School (national Trust) (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are home to about 74% of households in the streets around Millbank, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Clarence House, about 0.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Close to St James's Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For families living near Harris Westminster Sixth Form, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
