Fitted cupboards in Belgravia: what you get

We fit fitted cupboards in Belgravia and across London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, followed by a quote in writing. Once agreed, we make the cupboards in our workshop and fit them in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you are living with a cupboard for the meters with easy access and a linen cupboard on the landing, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Belgravia are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard costs more but follows the room. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Belgravia

My home in Belgravia is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Belgravia?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Belgravia included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear

For a flat near London Victoria station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, and knowing this early saves changes later.

Storage in Belgravia homes: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 60% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Belgravia, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Belgravia, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned beforehand, particularly for larger pieces.

For an older house near St Peter's Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For families living near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
