Built-in bookshelves in Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets

Planning built-in bookshelves for a home in Bethnal Green? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • A room lined with books
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Bethnal Green

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best. If you’re living with books with nowhere left to go and shelves deep enough for large books, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Mansion block flats tend to have tall ceilings and walls that wander, while a flat in a newer block is more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Around Bethnal Green, most households live in purpose-built flats of one kind or another, so we check what each wall is made of before planning built-in bookshelves. Whatever the wall, tall pieces are fixed back securely.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. The sections are assembled once inside.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Saturday work by prior arrangement
  • Work across the whole of London
  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Bethnal Green

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Cambridge Heath station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

My home in Bethnal Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Cambridge Heath station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Near listed buildings like Church of St John on Bethnal Green, less than half a mile east of the centre of Bethnal Green, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Bethnal Green?

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.4 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
