Built-in bookshelves in Tower Hill: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Tower Hill, with about 23% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 30 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Tower Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 79% of households in the streets around Tower Hill, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Near listed buildings like Chapel of St Peter Ad Vincula, less than half a mile east of the centre of Tower Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near Church of St Peter ad Vincula, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Design visits and fitting in SE1, E1 and E1W work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Built-in bookshelves in Tower Hill: what you get

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bare wall above a doorway and storage for children’s books and games.

Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and around Tower Hill many homes date from those years. In a room like that, built-in bookshelves can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen, without putting up a wall. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Fenchurch Street station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Tower Hill?

Yes, Tower Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters. Spreading heavy books helps too.

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cupboards below

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Tower Hill?

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • A home library or study

For families living near The Aldgate School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Birch plywood

Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood helps keep long shelves flat.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in
