What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Built-in bookshelves in Stepney: what you get

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. If you’re living with space for art books and records and low shelves children can reach, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A good share of the homes around Stepney were built in the post-war years, between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war rooms tend to be squarer, with fewer alcoves and often no chimney breast. So built-in bookshelves often run along a whole wall, or create their own recesses around the screen or a window. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Stepney?

Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. A bowing shelf is normally too thin or too long for what it carries. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

For a flat near Whitechapel station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. Small marks on it are simple to touch up.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Stepney?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Stepney is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Stepney?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit. Spreading heavy books helps too.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It needs planning. We leave space so heat isn’t trapped. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that normally goes unused.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. The bookcase is made at our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Built-in bookshelves in Stepney: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Stepney were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%) and since 2000 (about 30%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Stepney, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John on Bethnal Green (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north, and St Augustine (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. A van working in Stepney will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If you live near Stepney Green Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
