Built-in bookshelves in Shadwell
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If your home has shelves packed two rows deep and bowing shelves in an old bookcase, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Shadwell, from mansion blocks to modern developments. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Either way, built-in bookshelves are made for the room as it is.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- The bookcase is made at our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What we do not do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Living-room storage in Shadwell
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Shadwell were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Shadwell, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Shadwell fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.
Close to Russia Dock Woodland? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Peter, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Shadwell is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 1 mile north-west of Whitechapel. Whether your home in Shadwell is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Across Tower Hamlets, we cover Shadwell.
We work across the SE16, E1 and E1W postcode area. We cover homes on streets like Swan Road, Thame Road and Brunel Road, along with the roads around them, for built-in bookshelves and any of our other fitted furniture. Shadwell sits close to the A101 and A126, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Neighbouring places we cover for built-in bookshelves include Ratcliff (1 mile north), East End of London (1 mile north-west), Wapping (1 mile west), St George in the East (1 mile west) and Limehouse (1 mile north-east). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places like Bethnal Green (2 miles north), Cambridge Heath (2 miles north), Bromley (2 miles north-east), Old Ford (2 miles north-east), Donnybrook Quarter (2 miles north) and Bow (2 miles north-east).

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A room lined with books feels different, and can include a desk or a window seat.
We are often asked to help with:
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Books piled on the floor
- A home library or study
Mansion House, about 1.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
What to check before you book
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Why bespoke in Shadwell?
Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Built-in pieces use the full height and the awkward corners.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Questions from Shadwell
Does a conservation area in or near Shadwell affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Shadwell?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What happens during the design visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we have measured up.
