How we make built-in bookshelves for London Fields
Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including London Fields. People typically come to us about shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and wasted wall space around a door or window, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. With purpose-built flats home to most households around London Fields, the sections for built-in bookshelves are planned during the design visit, sized for the tightest point on the way in. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in London Fields
In the area around London Fields, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of London Fields, 22 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in London Fields, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The New Lansdowne Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to Gayhurst Community School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a flat close to London Fields station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
London Fields is about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. Whether your home in London Fields is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. London Fields is one of the places in Hackney where we make built-in bookshelves.
Postcode districts we cover here for built-in bookshelves: E8, E2 and E9. We cover homes on streets like Tudor Road, Forest Road and Duncan Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want built-in bookshelves or another piece made for the room. London Fields sits close to the A1207, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also cover Hackney Central (1 mile north), Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-east), Dalston (1 mile north-west), Hackney (1 mile north-east) and Kingsland (1 mile north-west). Other parts of Hackney we cover include Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north), Manor House (3 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).
Around London Fields
We fit furniture in homes around Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives, The Urswick School and The Urswick School - A Church of England Secondary School, among other places. London Fields has its own railway station: London Fields station. Well-known places in the area include Hackney Walk (0.7 miles north-east) and German Hospital (0.6 miles north-west).
Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
What happens on fitting day
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
- The bookcase is made in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Bought bookcases usually come in one depth. Bespoke shelving can mix depths. Ready-made units cannot follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, leaving gaps or blocking access. Fitted furniture is built around them.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in London Fields
What you pay depends on:
- How square the room is
- How big the furniture is
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Your postcode and the borough
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Fields station?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in London Fields?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in London Fields?
Just use our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote in writing.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
We check how the wall is built during the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
What we do not do
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Making good walls that cannot take fixings
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
