Built-in bookshelves for your home in Bexleyheath
How we make built-in bookshelves for Bexleyheath
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. Most enquiries start with shelves packed two rows deep and storage for children’s books and games; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Bexleyheath, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Related advice
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

Living-room carpentry in Bexleyheath: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Bexleyheath were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 51%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. There are 11 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bexleyheath. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 51% of homes in the streets around Bexleyheath date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.
If your home is one of the older houses near Trinity Baptist Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. The wider area includes historic houses like Red House, about 0.4 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For families living near Upland Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Questions from Bexleyheath
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bexleyheath?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Is Bexleyheath in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Bexleyheath is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It can be done, but it needs careful planning. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
When you need someone else
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Knocking through or altering walls
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, and that is worth weighing up. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Bexleyheath
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How square the room is
- The overall size of the piece
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
What to send when you contact us
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Examples of the look you are after
- What the furniture needs to hold
To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.
