The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window

If you live near Danson Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

About our built-in bookshelves in Upton

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, from solid brick to lath and plaster or plasterboard on studs. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and space for art books and records; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of built-in bookshelves are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Upton, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Upton

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Bexleyheath station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that’s often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

How do I get started?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Allow room for the collection to grow

Keep a record of the colour so any touch-ups match. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves to avoid water marks. Wipe up spills straight away.

Upton homes and built-in bookshelves

In the neighbourhood around Upton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 12 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Upton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Upton, let us know during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a flat near Bexleyheath station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Trinity Baptist Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
