Built-in bookshelves in Arnos Grove
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Arnos Grove
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Enfield and the rest of London. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelving that frames a window and a home library or study.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Arnos Grove, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Living-room carpentry in Arnos Grove: local notes
In the streets around Arnos Grove, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Arnos Grove include Arnos Grove Underground Station (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Broomfield House Broomfield Park (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Enfield included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Arnos Grove. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
For a flat near New Southgate station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of London, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Arnos Grove
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?
Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Arnos Grove?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and strong, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It’s how a straight bookcase meets a wall that is not straight.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is typically too thin or too long for what it carries. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Low shelves children can reach
- Books with nowhere left to go
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
Close to Broomfield Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
Before you hire any carpenter

Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Fitting day, step by step
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
