Built-in bookshelves in Oakthorpe Park, Enfield

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Oakthorpe Park, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A room lined with books
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books

Built-in bookshelves in Oakthorpe Park

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. If your home has a home library or study and storage for children’s books and games, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Oakthorpe Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Palmers Green station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Oakthorpe Park?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber.

How do I get started?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Starting with a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • How square the room is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a written quote follows.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves

Load the shelves gradually and evenly. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports, which helps the shelves stay straight.

Don’t block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Trapped heat isn’t good for the room or the books.

In the area around Oakthorpe Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Close to Broomfield Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 1.7 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Palmers Green station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
