Fitted Wardrobes in Chadwell Heath
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Chadwell Heath starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
Fitted wardrobes for your home in Chadwell Heath
Chadwell Heath homes and fitted wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chadwell Heath were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 7 entries within half a mile of the centre of Chadwell Heath. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than a third of the homes in the area around Chadwell Heath (about 40%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are usually simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Granary to North West of Crown Farmhouse, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Chadwell Heath station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St Chad's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

About our fitted wardrobes in Chadwell Heath
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are a room too narrow for hinged doors and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Around Chadwell Heath, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. Small rooms like that suit fitted wardrobes, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Structural changes to the room
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Hinged or sliding doors
Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- Let us know which walls face outside
- In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
- Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.
Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chadwell Heath station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chadwell Heath?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.
How do I get started?
Just send us a few details through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
