Loft storage in Dagenham

Loft storage in Dagenham: what you get

A sloping ceiling leaves little room for a standard wardrobe. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the room’s height. We will plan it during the design visit in Dagenham. If your home has a dormer that isn’t being used and nowhere to store bags and boxes, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Dagenham, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Eaves cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Fitted storage in Dagenham

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 66% of the housing in the streets around Dagenham, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Dagenham Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Dagenham. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Barking and Dagenham sets its own rules. If your street in Dagenham is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Dagenham Dock station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like Church of St Peter and St Paul, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Dagenham, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. You choose the colour.

Plinths and scribe strips

The floor in a loft room is rarely perfectly level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors and drawers run true.

What affects the cost of loft storage

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Before the design visit

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Dagenham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Dagenham Dock station?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

What prompts loft storage in Dagenham

Some people want to make more of a dormer. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It adds storage without crowding the room.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • A converted loft with no fitted furniture
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Unused space in a dormer

For families living near Village Infants' School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
