About our built-in bookshelves in Enfield Island Village

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are shelves that suit a period room and a room lined with books.

A large share of the homes around Enfield Island Village date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. We plan built-in bookshelves around the existing sockets and aerial points, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Enfield Island Village?

Yes, we work across Enfield, Enfield Island Village included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Does a conservation area in or near Enfield Island Village affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Decorating the rest of the room

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Cupboards below

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.

Enfield Island Village homes and built-in bookshelves

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Enfield Island Village were built since 2000 (about 37%) and before 1919 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Enfield Island Village is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Enfield Island Village joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Close to Gunpowder Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your children go to Prince of Wales Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live in a flat close to Enfield Lock station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide

Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports, which helps the shelves stay straight.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
