Built-in bookshelves in Enfield

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Enfield

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Enfield?

Yes, Enfield is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

I live near Enfield Town station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Enfield

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. People usually come to us about shelving behind a desk for books and files and shelves that sag under books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Enfield, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Where other trades come in

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Knocking through or altering walls

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Living-room storage in Enfield

In the neighbourhood around Enfield, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and before 1919 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Enfield is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Enfield, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Close to Enfield Town Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Andrew Enfield Parish Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Enfield is about 2 miles south-east of Edmonton, within the London Borough of Enfield. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Enfield is part of that. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, large and small.

In EN1, EN2 and N21, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Lea Road, Farr Road and Cecil Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for built-in bookshelves. Enfield is near the A110; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. If you are just outside Enfield, we also cover Bush Hill Park (1 mile south-east), Bush Hill (1 mile south), Enfield Chase (1 mile west), Gordon Hill (1 mile north) and Forty Hill (1 mile north-east). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places like Edmonton (2 miles south-east), Palmers Green (3 miles south-west), New Southgate (4 miles south-west), Upper Edmonton (3 miles south), Oakthorpe Park (3 miles south) and Arnos Grove (3 miles south-west).

Landmarks near Enfield

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Enfield

Families often need shelves for children’s books and games. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Low shelves children can reach

If you live in a flat close to Enfield Town station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

How to choose a carpenter in London

Why bespoke in Enfield?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, and that’s worth weighing up. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Enfield

  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Finished by spray or by hand

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Enfield

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking near your home
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you get in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
