Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Built-in bookshelves in Edmonton

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We fit across Enfield and the rest of London. If you are living with shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and space for art books and records, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and a wall might be brick, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, then choose the fixings. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for built-in bookshelves; if not, a full wall works well.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Edmonton homes and built-in bookshelves

In the streets around Edmonton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Edmonton is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. The council can confirm if you are not sure. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Enfield included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Edmonton. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to All Saints' Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live near Pymmes Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Edmonton is in the London Borough of Enfield. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Edmonton included. Our work takes in places right across Enfield, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Postcode districts we cover here for built-in bookshelves: N9, N18, N13 and EN1. If your home is on a street like The Broadway, Plevna Road and Galahad Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for built-in bookshelves. Edmonton sits close to the B137 and B154. Nearby, we also make built-in bookshelves in Upper Edmonton (1 mile south), Picketts Lock (1 mile east), Northumberland Park (1 mile south), Ponders End (1 mile north-east) and Bush Hill Park (1 mile north-west). Elsewhere in Enfield, we also cover Enfield (2 miles north-west), Palmers Green (2 miles west), New Southgate (4 miles west), Enfield Chase (3 miles north-west), Gordon Hill (3 miles north) and Oakthorpe Park (2 miles west). Being one of the larger places in Enfield, Edmonton is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Around Edmonton

We fit furniture in homes around NiW Furniture pub, Starks Field School and The Latymer School and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Edmonton itself: Edmonton Green station. Well-known places in the area include Edmonton Green Shopping Centre (a few minutes’ walk north-east) and North Middlesex University Hospital (1 mile south-west).

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Edmonton?

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Room for a record collection

For a family home near Brettenham Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in as well as the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Why bespoke in Edmonton?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, to suit the room. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What you get with us

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Questions from Edmonton

Is Edmonton in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Enfield, Edmonton included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Edmonton Green station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later

Make a note of the paint colour used so any touch-ups match. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.
