Built-in bookshelves in Bush Hill Park: what you get

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Bush Hill Park, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are books piled on the floor and room for a record collection.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Bush Hill Park, so it is a layout worth planning for. Built-in bookshelves usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. It has no grain to show through.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Bush Hill Park

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bush Hill Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Bush Hill Park station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How deep should bookshelves be?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Bush Hill Park

Working from home is another reason. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

Close to Enfield Town Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the wall and your books, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
