How we make built-in bookshelves for Fortis Green

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. Typical reasons to get in touch are space for art books and records and empty alcoves that could hold books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Fortis Green date from before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for built-in bookshelves is chosen. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it, especially behind loaded shelves.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Before we arrive

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

How we price built-in bookshelves

The price for your room depends on:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How big the furniture is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in Fortis Green?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near Alexandra Palace station?

Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

How long will the fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

How deep should bookshelves be?

We set the depth to suit what you own. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Fortis Green

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different, and can include a desk or a window seat.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house

If you live near Cherry Tree Wood, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early

Keep a record of the colour for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the design visit, so the shelves can be sized for it.
