Fitted wardrobes in N6: how it works

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. Most enquiries start with standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and empty alcoves in the bedroom, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.

Starting with a design visit

Fitted wardrobes across N6: local notes

Across N6, including Upper Holloway, Highgate and Fortis Green, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. The inside layout is planned around your things.

The biggest shares of homes in N6 were built before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 55% of homes in N6 were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight. About 29% of households in the N6 postcode district live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in N6 are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

Highgate: Near listed buildings like Cromwell House, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Highgate, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to St Michael's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in N6

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through during the design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.
